Startups to compete for $100,000 in Velocity funding

University of Waterloo startup incubator Velocity unveiled today the ten finalists that will compete for their share of $100,000 in grant funding at the Velocity Fund Finals on Thursday, March 27.

The finalists will pitch their startup ideas for a chance to win one of four grants of $25,000 and a place as one of more than 30 startups operating at the Velocity Garage workspace in downtown Kitchener.

Winners of the inaugural Christie Design Awards were announced Friday at the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus.

A partnership between Christie Digital Systems Canada, Inc. (“Christie®”) and the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus, the Christie Design Awards provide students with ongoing opportunities to explore and learn the capabilities of interactive display.

More than 120 first-year Global Business and Digital Arts (GBDA) students from Stratford campus participated in the competition.

Former bitly chief scientist to speak at Open Data event

Hilary Mason, listed in Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People in Business 2013, will headline a Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) event at the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus this week.

Mason is a data scientist in residence at leading venture capital firm Accel Partners, and will speak at CODE's Inspiration Day program in Stratford on February 28. She will share the impact of Big Data, its possibilities, and the need for creative interpretation. Mason is a member of NYC Resistor and Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Technology and Innovation Advisory Council.
