Three Department of Chemical Engineering professors have been named to the 2023 list of Highly Cited Researchers. They are recognized as innovative researchers who demonstrate significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research.

Professors Aiping Yu and Michael Fowler were among the researchers who made the prestigious list. Both Yu and Fowler have expertise in electrochemical engineering and energy storage systems.

Yu, University Research Chair and Director of the Carbon Nanomaterials Laboratory for Renewable Energy and Multi-functional Composites is developing graphene to enhance energy storage in Zinc-ion and Na-ion batteries by utilizing 2D materials to increase energy and power density. Yu is also engaged in developing efficient battery recycling processes.

Fowler is a Canada Research Chair (Tier-1) in Zero-Emission Vehicles and Hydrogen Energy Systems. His research focuses on electrochemical energy storage models, distributed energy systems, such as wind and solar, and large-scale energy systems that take into account the impact of providing energy to zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEV), and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCV). He is currently a mentor for the Battery Workforce Challenge, a student competition to design and build an electric vehicle battery pack. Fowler is the Director of the University of Waterloo Green Energy and Fuel Cell Research Group.

Professor Zhongwei Chen, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering, also made the list.

The annual list of Highly Cited Researchers is published by Clarivate, an insights and intelligence company that gathers data from around the world to provide information to individuals and organizations.
