Winners of orchestra@uwaterloo Aria & Concerto Competition

Wednesday, January 31, 2018

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that we announce the winners of the orchestra@waterloo concerto and aria competition.

Eric Liang performed spectacularly with Brahms 2nd piano concerto, winning him the 1st place position. Eric will be performing the 1st movement with the orchestra@waterloo on our upcoming concert on March 29, 2018.

The two other winners tied for second place are Omer Strumpf, cello and Joanna Chu, piano. Schedule permitting they will perform with the orchestra in the fall 2018 term and the winter 2019 term with Elgar's cello concerto and Rachmaninoff's variations on a theme by Paganini respectively.

The level of performance was absolutely first-class for this competition, making it a real challenge to decide the winners. Many thanks to adjudicators Markus Scholtes, Barbara Hankins, Mark Vuorinen and Leonard Enns as well as Angelica Allen for her organization of the registration and running of the event.  The accompanists (Lorin Shalanko, Jason White, and Rebecca Booker) were stellar as well.  Special thanks to Dr. David Taylor for his financial support of this competition and vision for music here on campus.
