sedimentary
rock,
from
Wiarton,
Ontario.
Paleozoic,
Silurian,
400
million
years
old.
Eramosa
dolostone
was
deposited
in
a
shallow
salt
sea
in
the
Michigan
Basin.
The
eramosa
dolostone
forms
the
topmost
part
of
the
rock
outcropping
at
the
rim
Niagara
Falls.
The
fine
layering
in
the
rock
shows
that
it
formed
in
a
quiet
environment
where
stromatolites
(cyanobacteria)
grew.
This
material
is
used
as
a
decorative
stone
called
"Waterfall
Rock"
and
is
used
for
landscaping.
Used
along
the
new
boardwalk
in
Waterloo
Park
and
in
the
sculpture
garden
at
the
Seagram
Loft
Condominiums
in
uptown
Waterloo.
It
may
also
be
cut
to
enhance
the
layering.
