Youth Girls and Concussion Reporting

A community-based approach to concussion reporting in youth girls' sport

Concussion under-reporting is one of the most pressing safety issues in youth girls' community sport. This SSHRC-funded project takes a community-based approach to understanding and shifting the culture around injury reporting, by inviting youth girls and other sport community members to contribute their expertise and experiences.

Recognizing that young athletes are the experts of their own experiences, this research partners directly with youth girls to co-develop, distribute, and evaluate concussion reporting resources. The project aims to generate new knowledge about concussion education while exploring how youth athletes, coaches, parents, and sport leaders can work together to foster a safer reporting culture.

Why This Research Matters

By centering youth girls as partners in research, not just participants, this project models a new approach to concussion education that is informed by the people it's designed to serve. The goal is to create resources that resonate with young athletes and support a broader shift toward safer, more open conversations about injury and reporting in community sport.
