How do I join a student team?
Simple! Email or walk into the team work bay/meeting and say "I want to join your team." Remember: for most teams in the Sedra Student Design Centre, recruiting new members is one of their biggest challenges – this means that they will be happy to have you join their team.
How do I contact a student team?
Here are four ways to connect with a team in the Sedra Student Design Centre:
- Attend the team's weekly meetings – typically held in one of the meeting rooms in Engineering 5
- Visit the team's workbay
- Attend the Student Team Recruitment Open House, held at the start of the Fall semester.
Remember that the team leaders are busy with school (just like you) so it might take a day or two for them to respond to your email. Be patient.
What's the best way to find a team's email address?
The websites maintained by the student teams are the best place to find up-to-date contact information. The Sedra Student Design Centre website provides a complete list of the teams with current links to each of their websites.
Why should I join a team?
Being an active, involved member of a student team looks great on your resume. Employers are always looking for co-op and full-time employees with practical, hands-on experience. You'll also have many opportunities for networking with potential employers through team sponsors and at events. Not only that, being on a team gives you lots of experiences you won't get in a class room and it’s a lot of fun!
Is there a recruitment or hiring process for team positions?
For entry-level positions, no. As you spend time working with a team, gaining experience and showing that you are dedicated and willing to commit your time, you may be asked to fill leadership roles.
Do you have to be in an engineering program to be part of a team?
No. Any University of Waterloo student can join a student team no matter what faculty they study in. In fact, student teams are often looking for members from other programs to help with things like financial management, budget planning, advertising and marketing, graphics and website design, etc.
Will I be able to handle the load of being on a team and school at the same time?
Absolutely! You can be an active member of a student team by participating as little as 1-2 hours a week. When the competition approaches the team might need some extra help, but this is optional for those who are really passionate and dedicated to the team.
