Living in Residence

Three students sip coffee and socialize in the Ryan and Siegrfried Hall lounge.

Living in residence at St. Jerome’s is full of fun activities, great people, and life-long friendships. However, there are always some less than exciting processes and procedures that all students need to be familiar with, and this is where you will find them.

Guests and Visitors

You are welcome to have a guest stay with you while you are living in residence. Guidelines are included in the Residence Handbook, and guests must be registered through the Guest Registration Form and always accompanied by their host. Guests are not permitted to wander the building alone. Any un-registered or unaccompanied guests will be asked to leave. St. Jerome’s residence students are responsible for any misconduct on behalf of their guests and are expected to ensure that their guest respects St. Jerome’s property and people.

Residence Entry Fobs

Students must not lend their residence fob to anyone. If you lend your fob to someone, you will be subject to the Residence Conduct process outlined in your Residence Policies Handbook. All fobs issued remain the property of St. Jerome’s University. If you lose your fob, you must report it immediately to the Residence and Community Life team. Replacement fobs will be subject to a $50 fee. If you purchase a replacement fob, then find the missing fob within 7 days, you can return it for a refund of the replacement fee.

Laundry

Worried about lugging your laundry home all the time? Both residence buildings have laundry rooms for residents to do their laundry on-site. Make sure to orient yourself on how the St. Jerome’s washers and dryers work. There are many posters around the room that describe the machines, how they work, how much can fit in each machine, how to clean lint traps and courteous use of the machines and facilities. Overfilling washers and dryers will result in machine malfunction and breakdown. To avoid this issue, please be sure to read the posters. If you are still unsure check in with the Residence and Community Life team.

Residence Heating and Cooling

St. Jerome’s residence buildings are either set to heating or cooling depending on the time of year. The heating and cooling cannot be switched back and forth. We communicate with students regularly during seasonal temperature fluctuations, providing cooling techniques, plans for turning on or off the heating and cooling and how this process works.

Residence Contract and Conduct

The Residence and Community Life team and Student Affairs are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our students living in residence. Our conduct process is rooted in the St. Jerome’s mission of educating the whole person and focuses on encouraging students to take ownership and accountability for their behaviour. This process is guided by student development theories, restorative justice principles and our community values.

All residence policies are outlined in the Residence Policies Handbook. For details on the Residence Conduct scope, incident reports and reviews, sanctions and appeals, please review the Residence Policies Handbook.

If you have any questions, please contact the Residence and Community Life team at sjuresid@uwaterloo.ca.

Residence Contract and Terms

Contracted Information on your residence contract can be found on the Facts and Figures page.

While it is not common, some students need to change the terms of their contracted residence stay. Students should reach out to the Residence and Community Life team to discussion whether a change is possible.

If students have a two-term residence offer but would like to extend that to live at St. Jerome’s for a third term they can apply for a space with the St. Jerome’s Residence Community Interest Form. For example, if you have a residence contract for fall/spring, then received a local winter co-op job that would allow you to live in residence through winter term as well.

Breaking a residence contract

There are times where it may be necessary for a student to leave residence before their contracted terms are over. For information on leaving residence early, as well as potential fees and exceptions, please refer to section 5 of your Residence Contract. You can find your Residence Contract by logging into eRezLife and bringing up your Residence Offer email or by contacting sjuresid@uwaterloo.ca to receive another copy.

Rebooking Incentive Credit

The Rebooking Incentive Credit allows students who did not move into residence and forfeited their $500 deposit upon cancellation of their St. Jerome’s University residence contract to receive a one-time credit if they move into St. Jerome’s residence within one year of the contract cancellation. This applies to students who cancelled their residence contract, withdrew from residence or were at one point not eligible to reside in housing.

Students who select an alternative on-campus residence are not eligible for the Rebooking Incentive Credit, and their $500 deposit will not be applied. Students who forfeited a deposit from another on-campus residence are not eligible to receive the St. Jerome’s University Rebooking Incentive Credit.

To inquire about eligibility for the Rebooking Incentive Credit, please contact sjuresid@uwaterloo.ca.

Rebooking incentive credits will be applied to your Quest account once you move into residence, and we confirm your eligibility. The credit will automatically be applied about six weeks from the start of term.

Residence Handbook

All students who have been accepted to the St. Jerome’s residence, whether incoming or current students, will receive a copy of the Residence Handbook through email. You are encouraged to review the Handbook thoroughly to familiarize yourself with the St. Jerome’s guidelines and community.

Maintenance Requests

Residence Rooms

If there are maintenance issues with your residence room, you are encouraged to submit a maintenance request. You must be as specific as possible when describing the problem to provide facilities staff with the information they need to triage problems. Maintenance requests, also known as Jiras, are processed based on priority. Unsure of whether your issue is a maintenance issue? Check in with your Residence Life Don and they can help you figure that out.

Common Spaces

Maintenance requests for common spaces should be submitted to one of the Residence Life Dons. They will ensure a maintenance request is submitted and log the request to prevent duplication.

Residence Meal Plan

Residence Meal Plan

The St. Jerome’s all-you-care-to-eat meal plan provides delicious from-scratch food sources from local farms to provide the freshest seasonal offerings to feed your stomach, foster your soul, and fuel your passions. The Douglas R. Letson Community Centre give students a space to eat and hang out together, and our round tables make it easy to include all your friends and floormates.

Dining Guidelines

The St. Jerome’s residence meal plan is all-you-care-to-eat, for each student – other students cannot eat on your meal plan. Much like an all-you-care-to-eat buffet, you cannot go with a friend and purchase just one meal ticket to feed you both. Friends and family are invited to eat at St. Jerome's but must pay separately.

  • Set mealtimes and eating in the Community Centre whenever possible provides many benefits, including:
  • A hub of connection and community throughout the day.
  • Creating routines and balance to contribute to student wellness.
  • Consistent food quality.
  • Bagged lunches and late dinners are available to students who are not able to make the meal hours, in addition each student will be given a punch card and are able to have to-go meals five times per term.

For more information about food services at St. Jerome’s, including hours, visit the Food Services page.

Dietary Restrictions

For complex dietary restrictions, please reach out to sjuresid@uwaterloo.cabefore applying to St. Jerome’s or accepting your residence offer. The meal plan is an integral part of the residence experience, and you are not able to opt out of it. It is important that students understand the benefits and limitations in advance.

While dietary restrictions may limit some options in the cafeteria, our kitchen team is excellent at accommodating a wide range of needs. Vegetarian, vegan and halal diets are easily supported.

To inquire if your dietary restriction can be accommodated, please reach out to sjuresid@uwaterloo.ca as soon as possible.
