Experiential Learning with EDGE

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING WITH EDGE

In this session, we will explain the framework of the EDGE Experiential Education Certificate Program and how it is helping non-co-op students to increase their employability and make the most out of the experiences they have throughout their undergraduate careers. The EDGE certificate program launched formally for students in Fall 2017. Since its creation within the Waterloo Professional Development Program (WatPD), EDGE has accepted over 500 students into the certificate program from across all faculties with non-coop programs. In the first year of operation students complete over 350 milestones towards the completion of their certificate programs culminating with 4 students graduating with the certificate. Through six milestones, the certificate program helps students to identify their skills, reflect on their experiences, develop professionally, and articulate everything they’ve learned to a future employer. Students supplement their experience milestones with two targeted workshops and a course on career fundamentals. We’ll showcase the program and the current pilot project with the Arts faculty to re-launch two internship opportunities for students.

Experiences undertaken by EDGE students on campus, including working as a Don in Housing and Residences, volunteering within the English Language Institute at Renison, executive positions within clubs and societies, and many other positions on campus have historically offered students opportunities to develop and further their personal and professional skills. Through the EDGE program students combine these experiences with Professional Development courses, and reflection and evaluation components to maximize these opportunities for their future success.
