FACE-TO-FACE NETWORKING: CONQUER YOUR FEAR

Networking is a valuable skill that can help generate opportunities, build connections, raise your profile, increase confidence and provide satisfaction in helping others and gaining advice. The goal of this networking session is to give participants strategies and tools to increase their confidence for effective networking. Participants will gain an understanding of the benefits of face-to-face networking within their work and personal life, learn how to identify and prepare for networking opportunities, how to initiate conversation and create powerful first impressions through building a personal elevator pitch. In addition, participants will learn tips and tricks on how to follow-up effectively for maximum impact.

  • Understand benefits of networking and how it can apply in work and personal life
  • Learn strategies and techniques for identifying and planning networking opportunities, initiating conversations, creating positive first impression and follow-up to increase effectiveness
  • Learn how to build a personal elevator pitch to be used while networking

Presenter:

Evelyn Allen is currently Manager of Corporate Research Partnership in the Office of Research, working to connect companies with University of Waterloo’s research expertise, technology and talent in the areas of Science, Environment and Applied Health Science. Evelyn has 15 years of professional multidisciplinary experience leading and managing projects in industry (engineering consulting and at an entrepreneurial technology company) and partnership building within complex environments to drive collaborative innovative projects between government, industry and academia. Evelyn is an expert communicator with experience in building productive relationships, facilitating meetings, public speaking, and leading outreach and partnering initiatives between multi-stakeholder groups. Evelyn has built an extensive network within the innovation sector including within government, industry, Universities and internally at UW, which she uses to support her work in fostering research partnerships. Evelyn has a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from McMaster University, a Master’s in Environmental Engineering from the University of Guelph, and is a registered professional engineer in Ontario.
