Yoga for People Who Sit a Lot

YOGA FOR PEOPLE WHO SIT A LOT

Sitting at a desk is part of our jobs, but we know that long periods of sitting is not great for overall health. Bringing awareness to the areas that suffer most, such as the upper back and neck, we can find ways to counteract the chronic pain and stiffness. Participants will leave the session with increased body awareness, an understanding of the areas that become tight or weak, and what they can do about it. Students will be provided with a print out of some of the poses and movements they can do on their own, many at their desk! The sheet will also provide some information about the parasympathetic nervous system, what happens when we are chronically using the "Fight or Flight" side of our nervous system, and how to deregulate through restorative yoga

The practice of yoga through postures, breath, and meditation can provide a healthy body, mind, and spirit. This yoga session is targeted specifically for those who sit a lot; observing areas in the body that become chronically tight or weak from long periods seated at a desk. Invite in a new sense of awareness through gentle movement to open up and activate your muscles. The session will finish with restorative postures designed to deregulate the nervous system leaving you calm and refreshed for the rest of your day.

No yoga experience necessary, only an open mind! Materials required: one yoga mat and one blanket or towel (if you don't have a yoga mat, two blankets/towels will work).

Presenter(s)

Amanda Brown (WatPD, Experiential Learning Outreach and Event Manager) has been a student of yoga for over ten years. In 2016, began her journey as a teacher in the Yoga Medicine by Tiffany Cruikshank 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training program. The strong anatomical focus of the program provided the knowledge to deepen her practice, as well as the ability to guide others through exploring their own experiences on the mat. Her classes are designed to help students explore body and mind awareness through creative sequences, leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
