Student Leadership for the SDGs

SDG Week Canada was a success for SDG Student Hubs across Canada! SDSN Canada supports 13 formal and informal SDG hubs across Canada, encouraging student leaders on campus to educate their campus community on the SDGs and take action to promote sustainable development. Many of our hubs hosted events including webinars, hackathons, and case competitions.

Learn more about the events hosted at the McGill University, the University of Waterloo and Mount Royal University below.

Impact Alliance (University of Waterloo) - SDG Impact Challenge

SDG Impact Challenge is an annual hackathon hosted by Impact Alliance at the University of Waterloo. The event brings together students across faculties to create solutions for an SDG-related problem. This year, Impact Alliance partnered with Avani Bio Energy, Co-operative and Experiential Education at the University of Waterloo, Abliminal Solutions, and the Waterloo Institute of Sustainable Energy to deliver a hackathon related to carbon offsets. 65 students participated over the two-day event, generating a wide variety of solutions!

Mount Royal University SDG Hub - 17 Goals Fair

One of the events hosted by the MRU SDG hub was the 17 Goals Fair, which was a public information event about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hub members represented each of the 17 SDGs and acted as student experts at the SDG booth. Attendees were able to learn about issues that SDG Hub members were passionate about that aligned with the goals, including poverty, climate action, responsible consumption and production, and clean water and sanitation. The event highlighted connections between the many goals in each topic to adequately capture the complexity of these issues. Participants collected stickers from each booth and were entered to win a sustainable-themed gift box based on goods from local businesses.

McGill SDG Hub - Poverty, Education and Gender Workshop

McGill worked with a number of different student organizations to run events every day of SDG Week! One of the many events hosted at McGill was a workshop related to poverty, education, and gender, which focused on the gender imbalance of SDG implementation as well as the disproportionate mental health impacts of the climate crisis on women. This event worked to educate attendees on these issues while teaching them to mend clothes, which offers insight into gender imbalance associated with housework, in addition to teaching them a critical sustainability skill. This event was hosted by McGill’s Collective for Gender Identity and Beyond Me.

All the SDG Hubs across Canada had a successful SDG Week! Thank you again everyone for your participation in this important week of education and action.
