On Thursday, September 14th at 2pm Layton Friesen will be defending his doctoral thesis, which is entitled "Unity in Difference: Hans Urs Von Balthasar’s Christology as Resource for a Mennonite Theology of Peace." Layton provided the following brief synopsis of his work:
"In this thesis I look at the way the theological undercarriage of Mennonite pacifism changed in 20th century secularity, as ethics became increasingly able to stand on its own apart from theology. I explore A. James Reimer’s Tillichian method of dealing with the independence of ethics from theology. Finally I look to Hans Urs Von Balthasar’s Christology for support in re-capturing pacifism as a form of sanctity."
The defence will take place at the Toronto School of Theology on Thursday, September 14th from 2–4pm in Boardroom 2. Current TST students and faculty may attend the defence itself and TMTC will be hosting a reception, to which all are invited, immediately afterwards. Please join us if you can!
