Inheriting John Howard Yoder

A New Generation Examines His Thought

A conference organized by the Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre

The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for emerging scholars to contribute to the ongoing assessment of John Howard Yoder’s thought, in conversation with scholars at all stages of their careers. Papers will be presented by graduate students, doctoral candidates and those who have recently received a PhD. Senior scholars will be involved as invited speakers, respondents, and panel members. Papers will deal directly with Yoder’s work from a variety of disciplines, perspectives and Christian traditions. There will be discussions of recently published books on Yoder and his thought, and a panel discussion on “Teaching Yoder.” The intent of the event is to bring together thoughtful voices both critical and appreciative of Yoder’s legacy.

Four invited speakers, each representing an educational institution with an official link to TMTC, will give a plenary address that discusses the general direction of Yoder studies, and responds to papers presented in phase one of the “Yoder Project.” These speakers are:

• Chris Huebner, Canadian Mennonite University
• Gayle Gerber Koontz, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary
• Mark Thiessen Nation, Eastern Mennonite Seminary
• A. James Reimer, Conrad Grebel University College/Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre (TMTC)

This conference is the second phase of TMTC “Yoder Project.” Phase one, “Yoder: Pro et Contra” consisted of papers presented in the context the regular meetings of the TMTC Fellows Group (graduate students at the Toronto School of Theology or the University of Toronto who have chosen to affiliate with TMTC) and other members of the local community. Participants in the conference are encouraged to read these papers in advance. The authors will give brief synopses during plenary sessions, prior to the responses by the invited speakers.
