A laboratory at Waterloo Engineering is part of a consortium that recently won up to $49 million in federal funding to accelerate the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning technologies in health care.

The Knowledge Inference in Medical Image Analysis (KIMIA) lab is headed by Hamid Tizhoosh, a systems design engineering professor and expert in medical image analysis.

In all, the Industry Consortium for Image-Guided Therapy (ICIGT) has $126 million in backing and involves more than 70 partners from industry, academia, and the government and not-for-profit sectors. It is led by the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

The lab’s partner in a project to develop intelligent algorithms in digital pathology to improve the speed, cost and accuracy of diagnosis is Huron Digital Pathology of St. Jacobs.
