After a period of transition, the Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies is ready to resume its active role in facilitating and stimulating collaborative and interdisciplinary research in Hellenistic studies.
Appointed Director to the Institute by the Dean of Arts Dr. Alexie Tcheuyap in September, Dr. Altay Coskun (Professor and Associate Chair of Classical Studies) convened the new Executive Committee consisting of Dr. Alicia Batten (Professor of Religious Studies, Conrad Grebel University College), Dr. Riemer Faber (Professor of Classical Studies), Dr. Andrew Faulkner (Professor and Chair of Classical Studies), Dr. Jacqueline Feke (Professor of Philosophy), and Dr. David Porreca (Professor and Program Co-Director of Medieval Studies). They discussed how to develop efficient administrative structures without delaying taking on new research initiatives.
The first collaborative activity will be the international workshop on Female Roles in Ancient Foundation Legends, to take place in Waterloo on October 6, 2025. The Institute will likewise support Seleukid Study Day VIII: The Afterlife of the Seleukids (Utrecht, November 12–15, 2025) and Micrologus Conference 2026: Hermes and the Sciences (University of Naples "L’Orientale", June 9–12, 2026). Stay tuned for these and other events – and feel welcome to reach out to Dr. Coskun.
