RF/Microwave Sensor Integration for Microfluidics

Two graduate student positions (at MSc. and PhD level) are available at Waterloo Microfluidics Laboratory (WML) within the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, University of Waterloo. Successful candidates will pursue their degrees via interdisciplinary research of RF/microwave sensors and microfluidics through either the Mechanical and Mechatronics or Electrical and Computer Engineering departments. The main goal of these positions is to leverage microwave designs as a multifunctional system for automatic monitoring and control of samples in microfluidics whether they are pico- to nanoliter. Additionally, the opportunity to translate the developed sensory device toward a wide range of applications will be explored.

The candidate for these positions should have:

  • A BSc. degree (for MSc. level) and/or an MSc. degree (PhD level) in electrical engineering, applied physics, physics, or related fields.
  • Strong background in electromagnetics, microwave engineering, and analog circuit design.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with microfluidics, Lab-on-a-Chip technology, fabrication and automatization of microfluidics is an asset.
  • Experience with microwave design software (such as ADS, CST, or HFSS).
  • Flexibility and ability to work in multidisciplinary and collaborative research projects.
  • Excellent communications skills, creativity, ability to work independently and as a team.

About us: We are expanding microwave-microfluidic research in Waterloo Microfluidics Laboratory with the goal of solving life science and environmental challenges using microsystems tools.
