Career Planning 

This month the suggested meeting topic is Career Planning. We encourage you to have an in-depth discussion about the Mentor’s career path. 

Suggested Questions: 

  • Did you complete co-op in University. If so, how did you choose your co-op placements?

  • What were some of the most important lessons you took away from your co-op experience?

  • What previous jobs have you had, and how did they contribute to your current role? 

  • Which companies have you worked for, and what did you like and dislike about each one? 

  • What were your managers like? What characteristics did you admire about your favourite manager? Did you ever have a manager whom you did not feel compatible with? If so how did you deal with it? 

  • What were your daily duties like in your workplace? Did you learn any new skills? 

  • Why did you choose this career path? If you were starting over would you do anything differently? 

  • Discuss how and why they made certain decisions. Was there any other career path option you had but did not take? 

  • Discuss their education and if they ever had the thought to continue their education in their adult life. If so, what would they like to take and why? 

Action Items: 

  • Both of you write down 3 short term goals (to happen in 1-3 years) and 3 long term goals (to happen in 5-10 years). 

  • Discuss the skills that will be required to achieve the 5-10-year goals for each of you. 

  • Schedule the next meeting. Is the method discussed in first meeting working? Does anything need to be changed?
