What should I look for in an institution partner?

When deciding which university, college or polytechnic to use for connecting you with talented students, here are some factors to consider:

Type of experience

Some institutions offer many different types of work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences, while others only offer certain types based on their programs.

If you would like to work with co-operative education students, CEWIL Canada has a Co-op Program Directory where you can search for a co-op program based on institution, program classification, and location.

Student Program

If you would like a WIL student from a certain discipline or to have specific skills, consider choosing the institution based on programs offered. For example, if you are looking for a WIL student with technical skills related to computer engineering, research the top computer engineering schools in your area.

In addition to technical skills, we encourage you to consider the transferable skills that will help your student succeed in the role. While researching programs, see if the institution highlights ways students are supported in developing skills like communication, problem solving, and teamwork.

Location

To find students that match your needs, think about broadening your location search for a wider talent pool.

  • Many students attend a post-secondary institution in a new city, and plan to complete WIL experience closer to "home".
  • Some students are willing to relocate for longer term experiences, like co-op work terms or internships, so you can leverage the unique aspects of your location to attract talented students.
  • You can expand your options even further by offering a remote WIL experience.
  • Choose an institution in your region if you'd like to be able to travel to campus for the recruiting process or for the experience.

Institutions with large programs, such as Waterloo's co-op program, have staff strategically located to support employer partners.

Level of support

The level of support varies by institution. Ask the institution about the support they offer and determine if it will meet your needs to deliver a successful experience. You may need support with the following milestones:

  • Help you identify opportunities for WIL
  • Advertise job postings
  • Provide you with résumés of interested candidates
  • Arrange interviews
  • Extend offers of employment
  • Offer support during the experience
