From starting to write at the university level to putting the very final touches on your thesis, our workshops cover a wide variety of material that is aimed towards helping graduate and undergraduate students to master the world of writing! For example, here are a few of the workshops and resources that we are currently offering to grads and undergrads:

Undergraduate Workshops and Resources

  • How to Read for Research: Learn how to read strategically and critically while also learning how to take notes for your own research or research assignments.

  • Breaking Down Assignments: Geared to first years, this workshop provides students with a general guide to completing any university-level written assignment. It then follows up by introducing more specific guides for completing particular types of writing assignments (lab reports, reflections, journal reviews, etc.).

  • Organizing Your Writing: This resource can help you to lay down the foundation of your paper with a focused idea statement. It also goes over how to construct a complete paragraph in an academic essay and how to use transitions at the sentence-level, paragraph-level, and section-level.

Graduate Workshops and Resources

  • Tri-Agency Scholarships: This workshop walks you through how to plan and write the critical research proposal portion of your SSHRC, NSERC, or CIHR scholarship application. It also includes a discussion on the key components of research proposals and how to communicate your research plan as well as your credentials with confidence and clarity.

  • From Topic to Thesis: This online resource will help you to select an appropriate topic for a thesis and then teaches you strategies for turning that topic into a fully-fledged thesis statement.

  • Getting It Done; Productive Writing Strategies for Big Projects: In this workshop for graduate students, you will learn how to set goals, manage the moving pieces of a large project, and establish an effective writing practice. This workshop is definitely for you if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of writing a dissertation or thesis, if you don’t know where to start, or if you're having trouble getting started at all on a big project. It begins with a reflection of your current writing practice in order to identify what adjustments might help you to make consistent and sustainable progress on your project. Afterwards, you will be introduced to a wide range of strategies for making those adjustments and will be provided with opportunities to practice them.

All online workshops and resources are available via LEARN; simply sign in, self-register for any workshops or resources that interest you, and watch as they populate your LEARN homepage.

We can't wait to see what you create with your new skills!
