The Process Systems Engineering group (PSE) in the Department of Chemical Engineering recently organized the 2023 Control and Stats Meeting on May 8th and 9th. This event provided an opportunity to showcase the research projects of professors and graduate students from various universities in Ontario and Quebec, focusing on the field of process systems engineering.

“This meeting provides graduate students with the opportunity to interact in a very informal and friendly way with their peers conducting research in Process Systems Engineering in Ontario and Quebec thus allowing them to expand their academic and professional network,” says Professor Luis Ricardez-Sandoval, Canada Research Chair in Multiscale Modelling and Process Systems.

There were presenters from Queens University, McMaster, Laval, University of Toronto, Montreal Polytechnique, University of Sherbrooke, and the University of Waterloo. About 65 attendees took part in this year’s conference.

The key subjects covered in this conference included modelling of chemical processes, biosystems, process control, multivariate statistics, chemical process optimization, machine learning, parameter and state estimation, fault detection, and more.

Professor Nicolas Hudon, from Queens University, has been attending the conference since 2002.

“This conference is mainly for students to present their work and become part of the community,” says Hudon.

The Conference has a rich history that dates back to 1970, with the aim of providing graduate students with a platform to showcase their research to a highly specialized community in process systems.
