National Communities of Practice to Accelerate Integration of Climate Change Education (CCE) in Professional Degree Programs

In the third component of the project, Accelerating Climate Education for the Next Generation of Professionals, the Waterloo Climate Institute is planning to support (and if needed establish) national communities of practice to advance the integration of climate change adaptation curriculum into professional programs in other post-secondary institutions through capacity building and information sharing. The focus is on these key disciplines:

  • Accounting

  • Architecture

  • Civil and Environmental Engineering

  • Systems Design (and related) Engineering

  • Planning

Activities under this component include:

  • Compiling and share findings, best practices, and tools to support the integration of new CCA competencies into programs across Canada through existing professional and academic networks as well as the Climate Institute website

  • Hosting three national fora to bring educators of future accountants, architects, engineers and planners together to meet, talk to each other, and share experiences related to integrating climate education into their programs. The first one is planned for March 2025 and will be virtual – more information to come!.

  • Hosting meetings, discussion and resource sharing among networks of professional schools and accreditation bodies

  • Presenting and hosting workshops on climate change adaptation education at professional and academic conferences
