Ali obtained both his bachelor's and master's degrees in materials engineering with a focus on light metal alloys, extractive metallurgy, electrochemical coatings and corrosion.

He then joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Waterloo in January 2011 as a PhD student. Relying on his strong problem solving and analytical skills, Ali was the first to develop a simple, low cost, and commercially viable process to fabricate large-area transparent flexible electronics that are based on transition metal oxides, in the Advanced Flexible Electronics Technology group (AFET) and Giga-to-Nanoelectronics (G2N) Centre. Ali successfully completed his PhD in the Winter of 2016.
