At the intersection of health, society and technology
With the support of the Lupina Foundation, postdoctoral scholars in Arts are improving healthcare
By Faculty of Arts
The Lupina Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowships at the University of Waterloo, established by Dr. Peter Warrian and Dr. Margret Hovenec, support interdisciplinary healthcare research by emphasizing the importance of humanities and social sciences alongside medicine. The fellowships focus on advancing research at the intersection of health, society, and technology.
Two current fellows illustrate this approach. Dr. Reza Hadi Mogavi, a computer science graduate, is working on improving "exergames" (exercise-based video games) to better engage seniors from diverse backgrounds, aiming to enhance their physical health. Dr. Krystle Shore, who completed her PhD in sociology and legal studies, is critically examining the use of AI-supplemented electronic health record systems in Canadian long-term care facilities. Her research seeks to determine which healthcare tasks benefit from AI and which require different solutions.
Since its founding, the Lupina Foundation has supported over 250 postdoctoral researchers and projects worldwide, with topics ranging from trauma research in Northern Ireland to agoraphobia treatments. Warrian and Hovenec’s fellowships foster interdisciplinary innovation and excellence in health research.
