Two University of Waterloo researchers, Drs. Ihab Ilyas and Laura Hug, have been recognized by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) for their outstanding contributions to artificial intelligence and environmental microbiology. Dr. Ilyas, a professor in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, has been named an RSC fellow for his pioneering work in big data and machine learning for data quality. He co-founded Inductiv, a startup acquired by Apple to enhance Siri’s data capabilities, and has also launched two other projects focused on large-scale data integration and error detection.
Dr. Laura Hug, a professor in the Department of Biology and Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology, has been inducted as a member of the RSC College. Her research addresses the microbial diversity in contaminated sites, focusing on reducing methane emissions from landfills, which contribute significantly to Canada’s greenhouse gas output. Hug’s work has helped cities monitor and reduce emissions, contributing to the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
Both researchers will be officially inducted during the 2024 Celebration of Excellence and Engagement conference in Vancouver, B.C. Their recognition highlights Waterloo’s commitment to addressing complex global challenges through innovative research.
