Galaxy Evolution and Environment in Southern and Eastern Ontario (GEESE-ON)

On October 14-15, the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics and Department of Physics and Astronomy will host the GEESE-ON Workshop, bringing together astronomers from across Southern and Eastern Ontario to discuss research relating to the evolution of galaxies.

This in-person workshop will focus on fostering collaboration between astronomers working on observations and simulations at Ontario universities, interested in topics including:

  • Morphological features of galaxies, and implications for galaxy evolution across redshifts
  • Star formation histories in nearby galaxies and the connection to gas
  • Evolution of galaxies in group and cluster environments
  • High-redshift galaxy properties and environments

While there will be some "lightning talks", the workshop will have a strong emphasis on discussion and hack sessions, allowing researchers to meet each other, learn about each other's expertise, and begin working together on new projects. Attendees are encouraged to focus on ongoing and future work, rather than previously-published research.

We particularly encourage early career researchers (graduate students and postdocs) to attend this meeting!

Registration

Registration for this workshop is open now via Google form (deadline Friday, September 19).

There is no registration fee for GEESE-ON. However, we unfortunately cannot offer financial support for travel or accommodation expenses.

As spaces are limited for this workshop, preference will be given to Ontario-based astronomers if necessary.

Accommodation

There is not a dedicated workshop hotel for GEESE-ON, but there are multiple accommodation options in the Waterloo area, including:

United College guest rooms — on campus (5 minute walk) — $115 per night

Delta Hotel Waterloo — 20 minutes walk — ~$300 per night

The Laundry Rooms Waterloo — 30 minutes walk or 20 minutes transit — ~$225 per night

The Laundry Rooms Kitchener — 40 minutes walk or 20 minutes transit — ~$165 per night

Waterloo Suites Hotel — 30 minutes walk or 20 minutes transit — ~$140 per night

Attendance at this workshop is limited, so please wait until confirmation of your attendance before booking any accommodation.

Workshop schedule

The workshop will take place over two days (October 14-15); a full schedule is now available. Tea/coffee and lunches will be provided.

The first day will be mostly dedicated to lightning talks (listed here), to allow attendees to hear what others are working on. The second day will consist of breakout sessions, where attendees can discuss topics in more detail, share data, and talk about the potential for collaboration on new research projects. These breakout sessions will be organized at the end of day one, based on the common themes that emerge during the day.

Location

The workshop will take place in the Quantum Nano Centre building on the University of Waterloo campus, labelled QNC on the Waterloo campus map. The central hub will be room 0101 on the ground floor of the QNC. There is a map available highlighting the rooms being used for the workshop.

You don’t need to buy a ticket in advance and can use your credit/Presto card to pay.

In the morning/afternoon, the Kitchener GO train runs from Union Station in Toronto to the train station in Kitchener. Again, you can pay with your credit card before you board. From Kitchener, you can take the tram, bus, or taxi from the train station to the university (~15min ride).

It may be possible to book a free UofT-PI shuttle which runs at fixed times, needs to be requested in advance.

From YYZ: Bus 115 from Terminals 1/3 to Bramalea GO -> GO Bus 30/GO train to Waterloo; or GO Bus 42/94 to Square on -> GO Bus 25 to Waterloo. There is also a Flixbus, it runs more rarely and goes straight to Waterloo, you need to buy tickets in advance.

Transit within Waterloo: The GRT LRT line (301) has a stop at the University of Waterloo campus, and runs north to south between Waterloo and Kitchener.

GRT bus routes that stop on the campus are: 9, 13, 19, 30, 31, 201.
