Matthias Schonlau is a professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. He is co-director of the University of Waterloo Survey Research Centre. Professor Schonlau joined the University of Waterloo after a 14-year career in industry. He previously held positions at the RAND corporation (U.S.A.), the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin (Germany), the German Institute for Economic Analysis (DIW), National Institute of Statistical Sciences (U.S.A.), and AT&T Labs Research (U.S.A.).

Professor Schonlau's primary research interests evolve around survey methodology. Current work includes using text mining to analyze open-ended questions. Professor Schonlau is the lead author of the book "Conducting Research Surveys via E-Mail and the Web".
