The Canadian Design Workshop 2 will be held online from Dec 7-9, 2022.

The last two years of teaching during the pandemic have been extremely disruptive to design teaching and research which has led to highly creative solutions, new ideas, and rapid adoption of both new and old technologies to maintain quality.  The last two years have also seen greater awareness of marginalized populations in society, and a renewed call to address systemic inequities in design education and research.

The theme of the workshop is Innovations in Design Education and Research. We are looking for a range of contributions from completed works, to works-in-progress, to new ideas. In alignment with the workshop theme, submissions are expected to fall under the following topics:

  1. Novel perspectives in design education/research:
    1. Incorporation of design justice, universal design principles
    2. Indigenization of design education and/or research
    3. Co-design and/or community-based approaches
    4. Other novel perspectives
  2. Novel approaches in design education/research:
    1. New tools, technologies or methods for design teaching, learning, or research
    2. Incorporating design learning in courses with no previous design focus
    3. Investigating design learning in co-curricular, and extra-curricular settings
    4. Other novel approaches

Participation at the workshop

Attendees are invited to (co-)author one or more contributions.  Only those authors who have an abstract accepted to the Workshop will be eligible to participate.  Submitting authors will also be required to review one other abstract submission.

There will be no proceedings from the Workshop. After the workshop, authors will retain the ability to complete the paper and submit to the publication of their choosing.

In their submission, authors are asked to indicate the format of their contribution, which can take one of two forms:

  • Completed works or works in progress
    • Authors will submit a 500-word abstract summarizing the contribution
    • At the workshop, such contributions will be grouped by theme
  • New ideas
    • Authors are invited to propose a new idea/topic to be discussed with other workshop attendees. The goal would be to gather initial feedback on the idea, find potential collaborators, etc.
    • Authors will submit a 500-word abstract summarizing the discussion topic and ways in which they plan to engage other attendees in the discussion
