The Canadian Design Workshop is offered in partnership with the Clive L. Dym Mudd Design Workshop and the Center for Design Education at Harvey Mudd College.
In 1997, under the leadership of Clive L. Dym, Harvey Mudd’s Department of Engineering instituted a biennial program of Mudd Design Workshops to bring together design educators, practitioners and researchers to discuss issues in design and engineering education. The MDWs have become a highly-desirable meeting place with important intellectual content on design pedagogy for engineering faculty. They regularly attract an international audience, including Canadian researchers and educators.
While sharing important commonalities, the Canadian engineering education and research landscape also presents important differences, including the general engineering educational landscape comprised of public universities, polytechnics, and colleges, regional geographic and cultural perspectives, differences in the industrial sector, and funding sources for design and engineering education research.
The Canadian Design Workshop is be a biennial meeting of engineering design practitioners, researchers, and educators that aims to:
- Help sustain a Canadian community of practice of engineering design educators and researchers
- Build a network of faculty and graduate students passionate about engineering design and design education
- Share current research, and evidence-based educational practices on engineering design and design education
- Share common goals/visions for design education in Canada
- Strengthen existing, and forge new collaborations
- Elevate engineering design education
- Capture industry perspectives on design and design education
