How can data help us better understand and strengthen resilience? Join us for a talk with special guest Dr. Seth Guikema exploring data-driven approaches to assessing risks to power systems and communities, with a focus on extreme weather, climate change and new data sources.

The resilience of infrastructure and communities is critical to society, particularly as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. Dr. Guikema will highlight research on the risks and resilience of electric power systems during extreme weather events, including how these models have been developed and applied by utilities and the U.S. federal government.

The talk will also explore how climate change may affect the risk of hurricane-related power outages in the United States and how new data sources, including cell phone location data, can help researchers better understand and model community resilience.

This event is open to all UWaterloo students, staff and faculty and is co-hosted by the Department of Systems Design Engineering and the Waterloo Climate Institute.

Time and Location: 12:00pm-1:30pm in E7 Faculty Hall (PSE 7303 & PSE 7363)

Graduate students are invited to attend a Graduate Student Roundtable from 2:00-3:00pm (location TBC).
