Student Climate Council

The 2024-25 application is now closed. Check back in August 2025 for the 2025-26 application cycle!

The Student Climate Council supports the planning and organization of the Student Climate Action Program. The Council is composed of 12 student volunteers, including two students (one undergrad and one grad) from each university faculty.

Members of the Student Climate Council will:

  • Act as student ambassadors of the Climate Institute within their home faculties, promoting the Climate Institute, its programs, and host one pop-up booth in their home faculty. 

  • Provide input on the Climate Institute’s programs, activities, and strategic planning, including the Climate Action Program that provides training for students. 

  • Support student events and activities through one or more of the following: coordination, promotion, attendance, facilitation, connections to their faculty or other campus groups. 

  • Attend all Climate Action Program events (exempt by class or work commitments) and encourage peers to attend. 

Students must apply for these one-year volunteer positions and will join the council from September to April. Members of the Student Climate Council will gain organizational and leadership skills and knowledge while empowering like-minded student leaders across campus.

Undergraduate Representative: Katie Yu

Katie is a first-year undergraduate Chemical Engineering Student who is interested in renewable energy sources, climate policy, and the intersections between climate change and other current issues. As a member, Katie hopes to contribute to opportunities for students to come together and engage in climate action initiatives on campus.

Manal Khan

Undergraduate Representative: Manal Khan

Manal is a 4th Year Chemical Engineering student and has a technical background in technological climate change adaptation and mitigation solutions. She hopes to contribute to the UW community through the climate council by creating spaces and opportunities for students to learn about and use their skills to contribute to the fight against climate change!

Soosan

Graduate Representative: Soosan Bahramian

Soosan is a PhD candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering, focusing on the impacts of wildfires on drinking water quality and treatability. Her research has involved collaboration with both small communities and larger municipalities, giving her a broad perspective on drinking water management challenges. She looks forward to learning from the diverse expertise of the Climate Council and engaging in meaningful discussions on how climate change affects our lives.

Undergraduate Representative: Cindy Qiu

Cindy is a 4th-year student at The University of Waterloo, majoring in Social Development Studies with a minor in Human Resource Management and specializing in social policy and social work. She is excited to bring her professional experience from environmental non-profits and the federal public sectors to her role on the Student Climate Council.

Zoya

Graduate Representative: Zoya Hashim

Zoya is currently doing a masters of Political Science at the University of Waterloo with a focus on climate policy. Her research explores climate impacts on critical infrastructure, including the agri-food system in Canada. 

She is passionate about the intersection between climate change, gender equity and social justice and is a strong advocate for disadvantaged communities around the world. Zoya is excited to join the Student Climate Council in an effort to translate her passion into impact and learn from the other great minds on the team!

Undergraduate Representative: Sharon (Iyanuoluwa) Adebisi

Sharon is a second-year undergraduate Environmental Science student with a geoscience specialization, passionate about climate policy, sustainable living, and raising awareness of climate change impacts on developing countries. She looks forward to learning from the experiences of everyone on the climate council and contributing to meaningful sustainability initiatives on campus.

Graduate Representative: Anjali Krishna

Hi everyone! My name is Anjali, and I am a first-year PhD student in Biology. My research focuses on climate change and its effect on the genetics and evolution of invasive red algae (Bangia) in the Great Lakes.

I am excited to be a part of the Student Climate Council to get more involved in climate action initiatives and raising awareness about climate change. I am also looking forward to engaging in conversations with different perspectives from all faculties on how climate change affects us.

Maya

Undergraduate Representative: Maya Le

Maya is a 4th-year Mathematics student with a specialization in Statistics. She has a technical background in quantitative risk analysis and experience working with climate risk models in both the private and public sectors. Maya is passionate about supporting sustainable solutions through a quantitative approach, and she hopes to contribute to the Waterloo Climate Institute to develop strategies for a more resilient future.

Ahnaf

Graduate Representative: Ahnaf Ryan

Ahnaf is a graduate student in computational mathematics, researching in climate change and machine learning. He currently works as a quantitative researcher at one of the leading Canadian Investment firms. Ahnaf is passionate about wildfires, flooding, and machine learning. He aims to use mathematics for the greater good of the society.

Undergraduate Representative: Nora Grande

Nora is a second-year student pursuing a degree in Health Sciences. She is passionate about climate change and has been involved in climate advocacy initiatives since high school. As part of the Student Climate Council, she hopes to help expose fellow students to the different aspects of the climate crisis. Nora is looking forward to learning alongside her peers and engaging in meaningful conversations surrounding sustainability.

Emily Dang

Undergraduate Representative: Emily Dang

Emily is a fourth-year Public Health student with a minor in Geography and Environmental Management. She is passionate about global health and is interested in exploring the intersection between climate change and public health. With experience in health equity research and non-profits, Emily aims to advocate for sustainable health solutions and drive policy change. She looks forward to collaborating with peers to promote awareness and action on climate-related issues.

Graduate Representative: Lisa Blank

Lisa is a graduate student in the School of Public Health Sciences focusing on the intersection of public health and sustainability. Her research uses systems thinking to examine sustainable food, its integration into healthcare, and its promotion through public policies. She also has professional experience as a front-line nurse in hospital and community care.

Undergraduate Representative: Charlotte Schwartz

Charlotte is a third-year student majoring in Geography and Environmental Management, passionate about promoting dialogue on environmental issues as an undergraduate research assistant, peer mentor, and Faculty of Environment ambassador. She is engaged in climate justice on the local and national scales through interning with Wisahktowinowak, a food security non-profit based in Kitchener-Waterloo, in addition to working as a climate adaptation project assistant with Northern Affairs Canada. Charlotte aims to make environmental literacy more accessible and hopes to strengthen sustainability resource-sharing networks across campus.

Kayla Bona

Undergraduate Representative: Kayla Bona

Kayla Bona is a second year undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Climate and Environmental Change. As the Environment undergraduate representative on the Student Climate Council, she is passionate about advancing climate action and fostering sustainable solutions on campus. Kayla is eager to use her background in climate science to contribute to impactful initiatives while advocating for climate policy and community awareness. She joined the Council to collaborate with other passionate individuals and spark sustainability efforts within the university.

Kwaku	Twum

Graduate Representative: Kwaku Twum

Kwaku is a PhD Candidate at the School of Environment, Enterprise, and Development (SEED). Before this, he had almost a decade of experience in digital innovations and business strategy, land management consulting in urban and regional development across Europe and Africa. He has worked in both public and private industries across the food and beverage industry, mining, and municipalities. He also has research experience in Climate adaptation and disaster management, responsible innovations, and transformation pathways in food, water, and land systems.

His research focuses on the (un)adoption of emerging digital agricultural technologies (DATs) and their role in climate change and biodiversity loss among small farmers.

He is an entrepreneur and Co-founder of Mapkot Technologies, a tech startup that provides data analytics tools for SMEs in Africa and South Asia. He is also Co-founder of Huts & Cities, a research advocacy organization supporting local education for underprivileged indigenous communities through research.
