Ammar Kamran (CFM '23) serves as CFM's first valedictorian

The Computing and Financial Management (CFM) program celebrated its spring 2023 graduates at a recent convocation ceremony held on Thursday, June 15 at 6:30 pm. This ceremony was the first time that a CFM student was selected as its valedictorian. Ammar Kamran (CFM '23) who began his studies in 2018 with twin brother Ayman, addressed the crowd of distinguished guests, faculty, graduating studies, families, President and Chancellor in an inspiring speech about new beginnings.
In an interview with the School of Accounting and Finance, Ammar reveals his interest in studying CFM and what he learned during his five years of co-op and study.
What drew you to the CFM program?
"It combines two rigorous and increasingly connected disciplines. I’m eager to launch my own startup someday, one that drives financial empowerment by extending the horizons of software and AI."
What is an important thing you learned during your undergrad?
"I learned to reflect deeply, analyze carefully, and collaborate closely! Intellectual curiosity is a very powerful tool for problem solving — whether that’s in the classroom, workplace or beyond."
How does it feel to graduate from the same program as your twin?
"It is both gratifying and exciting! We feel blessed to have shared an undergraduate journey while supporting each other along the way."
What advice would you give to new Waterloo students?
"Continue striving for excellence in all facets of life. Alongside your academic and extracurricular pursuits, make sure to take time out for your family and personal well-being."
What does it mean to you to be selected as Valedictorian?
"It has been a deeply fulfilling experience; it is an honour and privilege to represent the brilliant graduands of 2023! I am thankful for the opportunity to share our university experiences with our families, friends, and faculty, all of whom have offered us their unwavering support on this transformative journey."
