Welcoming Professor Toshiya Hachisuka to CFM
The Computing and Financial Management (CFM) program is excited to welcome Associate Professor Toshiya Hachisuka from the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science as its new Co-Director.
Professor Hachisuka brings his expertise in applied mathematics, computer science, and physics to the CFM program. His research focuses solely on solving complex problems related to numerical computation in computer graphics, with applications that have had significant impacts on industries such as visual effects for feature films and video games. With a strong academic background, having earned his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo and his PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego, Professor Hachisuka has held faculty positions at the University of Tokyo and Aarhus University in Denmark, where he taught and mentored students across multiple countries.
Incorporating his deep expertise in computational methods and their practical applications, Professor Hachisuka’s involvement in the CFM program will help advance the integration of innovative research in financial technology. As this rapidly-evolving field continues to grow, his research contributions promise to add significant value to the program, connecting new ideas with a real world impact.
As a Co-Director, Professor Hachisuka will be responsible for overseeing the direction of the program through the evaluation of its curriculum and job-ready preparation of its students.
We look forward to the unique perspective Professor Hachisuka will bring to the CFM program.

With the addition of Professor Hachisuka, we'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to outgoing Co-Director Professor George Labahn for his leadership and dedication to the program. George has served as a co-director for over ten years in non-consecutive terms, beginning as early as 2008. His contributions have been crucial in shaping the success of the program, and we are grateful for his continued support. George is retiring from the David. R. Cheriton School of Computer Science and we wish him the best in his retirement.
