Here's what students in the Courtenay Lab have been up to the past few months.

CRI Workshops/Courses in Fredericton

May 16-19, 2016: Nicole Stamnes and Jess Kidd attended an Advanced Wilderness Aid course in Fredericton, New Brunswick. This course was hosted by the Canadian Rivers Institute, and attended to fulfil course requirements for the CREATE Water Program to enhance first aid knowledge and concepts to meet the demands of working in remote environments.

May 14-15, 2016: Nicole Stamnes attended a Swiftwater Rescue course in Fredericton, New Brunswick. This course was hosted by the Canadian Rivers Institute, and attended to fulfil course requirements for the CREATE Water Program to understand safety precautions while working around water.

St. Lawrence

May 13, 2016: Sondra Eger, Jess Kidd and Nicole Stamnes [travelled by car from Ontario to New Brunswick to] attended the Integrated Forum Workshop at the University of New Brunswick, in Fredericton, NB. This course was taught by Roland Cormier through the Canadian Rivers Institute to provide an understanding about integrated management approaches and practices as well as risk management decision-making processes regarding water governance.

May 23-27, 2016:The recent OceanCanada in Vancouver meeting brought together working groups from all over the country to work on moving the OceanCanada research agenda forward. Sondra and Nicole represented the Courtenay Lab and CWN in their partnership with Ocean Canada.

May 27-28, 2016: Elaine Ho attended the Muskoka Summit with the following poster authored with Sondra Eger:

A Resilient Watershed: Applying a Systems-based Approach to Long-term Management of the Muskoka Watershed in Consideration of an Uncertain Climate Future

In considering the implications of predicted climatic changes, initiatives in the Muskoka region have been undertaken to explore opportunities to improve the management of the Muskoka Watershed. This includes the implementation of Cumulative Effects Assessment and Monitoring (CEAM). This study proposes a more comprehensive, multidimensional framework incorporating aspects of known approaches, including: Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), Adaptive Management (AM), vulnerability analysis, Environmental Assessment (EA), CEAM, and others.
