HeForShe Scholarship winners named; President to visit UN General Assembly

The five winners of this year's HeForShe scholarships.

Five young women with a passion for computer science, physics and engineering have received $12,000 scholarships under the University of Waterloo’s HeForShe IMPACT scholarship program.

The HeForShe IMPACT Scholarships annually awards female students who apply to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs.

This year’s recipients come from as far away as India and China and all are excited about diving into their chosen professions through their co-op education work terms.

The five winners of the University of Waterloo HeForShe IMPACT Scholarships (and their chosen programs of study) are:

  • Anjali Joshi, Mechanical Engineering
  • Carmen Kwan, Software Engineering
  • Yue Ding, Computer Science
  • Ankita Mishra, Computer Science
  • Stephanie Swanson, Physics

Launched last year, the scholarship program will support a total of 24 women over a four-year period as part of Waterloo’s ongoing efforts to achieve gender equity in STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—programs. Each student will receive $1,500 per term.

Waterloo is one of 10 universities around the world committing to take bold, game-changing action to achieve gender equality as part of the UN HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 framework. HeForShe is a global effort to engage men and boys in removing the social and cultural barriers that prevent women and girls from achieving their potential, and together positively reshaping society.

Working alongside governments, leading universities and global businesses, the University is making three commitments to achieve gender equality by developing innovative programming aimed at a full spectrum of women, from young girls right through to the University’s senior leadership.

The University of Waterloo has committed to:

  • Boost female student participation in STEM outreach activities and experiences to build the pipeline of future female leaders in traditionally male dominated disciplines;
  • Enhance the representation of female faculty to improve the campus environment today and drive towards parity in the future; and
  • Attract and advance female leaders to senior academic and administrative positions at the University.

For profiles of the young scholarship winners, visit the Waterloo Stories page.

The scholarship announcement comes as President Feridun Hamdullahpur prepares to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York City to report on the gender equality commitments the University of Waterloo has undertaken as part of the HeForShe IMPACT10x10x10 initiative.

President Hamdullahpur will participate in the launch of the first HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 University Parity report - the first progress report since 10 global universities publicly announced bold commitments to achieve gender parity by 2020. The report will highlight the participating universities’ successes and ambitions for gender equity on their campuses.

The HeForShe 10 IMPACT universities span across eight countries on five continents:

Georgetown University, USA; Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), France; Nagoya University, Japan; Stony Brook University, USA; the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong; the University of Leicester, UK; University of Oxford, UK; the University of São Paulo, Brazil; the University of Waterloo, Canada; and the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.

Take Back The Night march on Thursday

The University of Waterloo Take Back The Night participants marching.

This is the latest in a series of #UWCommunity stories that feature Waterloo in the community.

Join the University of Waterloo on Thursday, September 22, 2016 for Waterloo Region’s annual Take Back the Night (TBTN) march. Part of an international event targeting sexual and domestic violence, TBTN brings survivors and their allies together to walk in solidarity to draw public attention to the struggles women, children, and trans*people continue to face in our society.

This cause is especially important in our community because of its vital connection to our university and college campuses. Preventing sexual violence has increasingly become an on campus priority, with the University of Waterloo going to great lengths to inform students about topics such as consent and equal rights through initiatives like:

Attending TBTN is one more step in ensuring our school is an inclusive and safe space for students of all genders.

Lead by the Federation of Students’ Women’s Centre, students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited to gather in the SLC Great Hall and depart for Kitchener City Hall at 4:40 p.m. The march and associated activities, hosted by the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region, take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Men are also encouraged to attend the opening rally, line the march route, and join in afterwards. All are also welcome to participate in a poster-making and chant-learning event at the Women’s Centre on September 21 at 6 p.m.

Help us create change in our community. More info can be found at the TBTN registration page.
