Chemical Engineering 2025

Hi! My name is Sonita and I am in Chemical Engineering. I will be graduating in 2025.

Waterloo Engineering in one word:

Opportunities

I choose Waterloo Engineering because:

Waterloo Engineering has an amazing co-op program. Therefore, when it is time to graduate, I will have a variety of work experiences related to my program that will facilitate my job search upon graduation.

The best thing about my program is:

Chemical engineering is a fusion of math, chemistry and problem-solving. Chemical engineers are needed in many industries. With co-op, I get to discover what I like and in what industries I want to work in.

About my Co-op experience:

I am currently on a co-op term at NRCan in the Metallurgical Fuels Research sector where I  test coal samples. My previous work term was in the food industry where I worked in design and quality control. Both of these experiences are fantastic because I got to learn about manufacturing, research, and lab work in a professional environment.

I wish I had known before I came:

I wish I would have known about the variety of clubs UWaterloo has to offer. I did not join any clubs in the first two semesters although I would have liked to if I did more research about UWaterloo clubs.

Outside the classroom, I’m involved with:

Engineering Ambassadors (Engchats)

I participate in the Energy club.

I would like to do recreational tennis with UWaterloo next term.

A fun project I’ve completed:

In 1A, my team and I created a soap based on properties that we chose. We created a soap calculator that determined how much of each ingredient we should add to make the soap as close as possible to what we desired it to be. We added lemon zest to make our soap unique! I enjoyed this project because my teammates and I were involved from beginning to end: designing and making the soap as well as creating a packaging for it.

One more thing about me:

I used to do competitive gymnastics where I competed at Nationals 4 times. With my gymnastics team, I travelled to France, the United States, Mexico and all over Canada.
