Bracing for impact: Canada’s Path Forward In An Era Of Extreme Weather
Event Summary
Join Dr. Bruce Frayne, Dean of the Faculty of Environment, and Dr. Blair Feltmate, Head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation, for an insightful fireside chat (March 25, 2026), at the University of Waterloo (Arts and Lecture Hall, AL Room 113), 6:00 – 8:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public.
During this conversation, Dr. Frayne will lead a Q&A with Dr. Feltmate to explore how Canada is preparing for the growing threats of flooding, wildfires, extreme heat and other climate perils. They will discuss what’s working, what isn’t, and the critical steps needed to enhance Canada’s resiliency in the face of climate change. Dr. Blair Feltmate will draw upon his 20 years of experience in working with all levels of government, businesses, industry associations and NGOs to mobilize action to limit the impacts of extreme weather that touches every part of Canada.

Panel Hosts
Dr. Bruce Frayne
Dr. Bruce Frayne is a professor and the Dean of Environment. He is an Urban Planner and Geographer. His research interests fall within the broad ambit of sustainable cities, and encompass the three related areas of human migration, urbanization and food security with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and cities of the Global South. Bruce served as the Chair for the Canadian chapter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN).
Dr. Blair Feltmate
Dr. Feltmate is a professor and Head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation, University of Waterloo. Dr. Feltmate has served on the Advisory Table for Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy and chaired the Federal Government’s Expert Panel on Climate Adaptation and Resilience. He is Sustainable Finance Council member, Global Risk Institute, a primary advisor to Canada’s pension funds. In 2025, he was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contributions to sustainability and climate resilience. Earlier in his career, he was Vice President of Sustainable Development at the Bank of Montreal, Director of Sustainable Development at Ontario Power Generation, and Partner at YMG Capital Management.
