We Demanded: Law, Employment, and 2SLGBTQ+ History

Available to University of Waterloo employees  

The presentation will encompass a history of 2SLGBTQ+ Canada with a focus on Canadian 2SLGBTQ+ employment discrimination starting in the 1970s. Utilizing pieces of the ArQuives: Canada’s 2SLGBTQ+ Archives extensive collection archivist Lucie Handley-Girard will bring 2SLGBTQ+ history to light. The talk will highlight specific court cases that have changed the course of 2SLGBTQ+ rights in Canada, as well as instances of discrimination that have received less national media and legal traction but nevertheless showcase human rights violations, hate crimes, and the consequences of being out and outed in Canadian workplaces over time.
