As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Dr. Ryan Emmanuel, Associate Professor of Hydrology, Duke University, North Carolina, US, will present: On the swamp: Indigenous environmental justice across North Carolina’s coastal plain.

The University of Waterloo’s WWD event will be held in person at Federation Hall (FED) on Monday, February 3rd, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm EST. The event will consist of a poster session and reception followed by a distinguished lecture by Dr. Hilary Dugan, entitled: "Should we care about freshwater salinization?"

In this public talk, Dr. Dolphin will explore what it means to be a researcher aiming to do ‘good science’, while also doing ‘science for good’.

As a bioarchaeologist who works with human remains from archaeological sites in order to reconstruct the lives of past peoples, Dr. Dolphin’s research revolves around collaboration. Working with the dead requires strong relationships with, and sensitivities to, not only your colleagues and national governments, but to the local communities without whom you could not do your work at all.

In this online workshop, attendees will learn how different platforms and apps collect data about their users, how it can be requested and what you can learn about yourself by analyzing your data.

Online forums are rich sources of public data, offering insights into diverse topics and communities. However, this data often comes with anonymity, raising unique challenges and ethical concerns. This panel discussion will explore the complexities of using forum data for research and analysis: What are the benefits of studying anonymous versus non-anonymous online discussions? How do we address issues of privacy, representation and authenticity? Panelists will discuss case studies, policies and best practices for leveraging these digital conversations.

This workshop will discuss the growing calls in Canada and around the world to recognize and respect Indigenous Data Sovereignty and consider the importance of moving beyond the theoretical implications of this movement, using Wampum as an example.

In this 50-minute online workshop, Rachel Figueiredo, Waterloo’s entrepreneurship librarian, will show you how to search across academic, industry and openly available information to get a full picture of your problem space. By integrating new and familiar search tools, attendees will learn how to research efficiently so they can get back to solving problems.
