Climate Change Research and Action in an Era of Political Turmoil

Recent shifts in the United States’ federal leadership and policy have dramatically changed the landscape for climate action and scientific research. Canadian and global researchers and policymakers face significant consequences, particularly in areas where we have relied on U.S. partnerships, funding, and data to advance climate science and action. Join the Waterloo Climate Institute for a thought-provoking panel discussion "Climate Change Research and Action in an Era of Political Turmoil" on October 9th, 2025.

As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Soumya Balasubramanya, Senior Economist at The World Bank, Washington, DC, will present "Recent trends in groundwater use in South Asia: The role of technology and water-energy-food-poverty nexus tradeoffs."

This event is in person in DC 1304 with a networking reception to follow in DC 1301 (The Fishbowl).

TD Walter Bean Professorship in Environment

We are proud to welcome Sir Andrew Steer, the 2025 TD Walter Bean professor.

Sir Steer brings decades of global climate leadership to Waterloo for a timely and thought-provoking lecture on how we as leaders, innovators, and citizens can rise to meet the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, for nature, our cities and our future.

The CareNext Coalition is hosting their next CareNext Collective virtual forum.

Presented by Manulife, the July event is a candid and constructive deep dive into Waterloo Regional Health Network’s first attempt to co-develop and implement an AI tool to support general internal medicine — a project that, while ultimately not sustained, played a pivotal role in shaping our current AI readiness and strategy.

This session is for anyone interested in learning from failure, navigating complexity and building the foundations for sustainable innovation. Open to all WRHN team members, University of Waterloo staff, faculty and partners.

WISE PUBLIC LECTURE

WISE is pleased to announce a WISE Public Lecture with Jonathan Buonocore. Please join us in person or on Zoom for a discussion on the health co-benefits of renewable energy and climate policy. As the buildout of renewable energy has progressed, health co-benefits assessments have been conducted alongside evaluations of the health benefits resulting from changes in electricity generation. To meet our goal of keeping climate change below 2°C, current strategies under debate include electrifying other uses of fossil fuels—such as transportation and building heating and cooling—while expanding renewable energy to meet this increased electricity demand. This talk will explore recent applications of co-benefits assessments in the electrical grid and climate policy, how these methods are now being extended to buildings and transportation, and why health considerations should be more deeply integrated into energy policy.

Thursday, May 29, 2025 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

WISE PUBLIC LECTURE

WISE is pleased to announce a virtual WISE Public Lecture with Dr. Niall Conroy. Please join us on Zoom to discuss the remarkable transformation of newborn care at Bo Government Hospital in Sierra Leone’s second-largest city. In 2013, when Niall first arrived in-country, the hospital’s children’s ward was seeing only around 10 newborns a month—despite handling 5,000 deliveries per year in a country with one of the highest neonatal mortality rates in the world. Limited services and poor outcomes led many parents and healthcare workers to believe that seeking care for sick babies was futile; most newborns died either at home or in the labour ward. Over the past decade, the hospital’s special care baby unit has been transformed. This talk will share the story of that evolution and explore how sustainable energy solutions played a key role in building a trusted, life-saving service for the community.
