WISE PUBLIC LECTURE

WISE is pleased to announce a WISE Public Lecture with Jonathan Buonocore. Please join us in person or on Zoom for a discussion on the health co-benefits of renewable energy and climate policy. As the buildout of renewable energy has progressed, health co-benefits assessments have been conducted alongside evaluations of the health benefits resulting from changes in electricity generation. To meet our goal of keeping climate change below 2°C, current strategies under debate include electrifying other uses of fossil fuels—such as transportation and building heating and cooling—while expanding renewable energy to meet this increased electricity demand. This talk will explore recent applications of co-benefits assessments in the electrical grid and climate policy, how these methods are now being extended to buildings and transportation, and why health considerations should be more deeply integrated into energy policy.

WISE PUBLIC LECTURE

WISE is pleased to announce a virtual WISE Public Lecture with Dr. Niall Conroy. Please join us on Zoom to discuss the remarkable transformation of newborn care at Bo Government Hospital in Sierra Leone’s second-largest city. In 2013, when Niall first arrived in-country, the hospital’s children’s ward was seeing only around 10 newborns a month—despite handling 5,000 deliveries per year in a country with one of the highest neonatal mortality rates in the world. Limited services and poor outcomes led many parents and healthcare workers to believe that seeking care for sick babies was futile; most newborns died either at home or in the labour ward. Over the past decade, the hospital’s special care baby unit has been transformed. This talk will share the story of that evolution and explore how sustainable energy solutions played a key role in building a trusted, life-saving service for the community.

Shaw-Mannell Award and Lecture

The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is proud to present the Shaw-Mannell Leisure Research Award Lecture featuring 2024 recipient, Dr. Ana Maria Munar.

The award recognizes international career contributions to the study of leisure, broadly defined, and influence on leisure scholarship at the University of Waterloo. The award is named in honour of retired faculty members Sue Shaw and Roger Mannell to recognize their outstanding individual career achievements.

This presentation explores how social capital can be harnessed to support place transformation. Despite its recognized importance, social capital remains poorly understood due to fragmented definitions and theories. By framing it as a form of capital, this talk presents a unified framework that clarifies how elements like trust, networks, and norms enable collective action

Non-binary Lives in Divided Times

Divided postwar Berlin was home to people of different non-binary genders. They found or made spaces for living dignified lives, even in the deeply queerphobic societies of Cold War Germany. In her talk, Andrea Rottmann will introduce us to some of them and to the pleasures and problems of writing their histories.
