Climate change is increasing flood risks, threatening critical ecosystems, and creating new challenges for sustainable economic development around the world. In Indonesia, these interconnected issues are increasing at significant rates.
The Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability (FINCAPES) project is a bold and collaborative initiative helping Indonesia respond to these challenges while advancing climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. Funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, FINCAPES is a 5.5-year partnership led by the University of Waterloo that brings together researchers, governments, communities, industry, and civil society organizations from Canada and Indonesia.
Drawing on internationally recognized expertise from the University of Waterloo's Faculty of Mathematics and Faculty of Environment, FINCAPES connects research, policy, and practice to develop solutions that support both people and ecosystems. Through a gender-responsive and partnership-driven approach, the project strengthens local capacity, generates new knowledge, and supports evidence-based decision-making for a more climate-resilient future.

The Indo-Pacific is home to rapidly growing economies and accounts for more than half of global greenhouse gas emissions, making regional collaboration essential to achieving global climate goals. Through FINCAPES, Canada and Indonesia are working together to advance clean energy transitions, reduce emissions, protect ecosystems, and promote inclusive, sustainable growth.
