Awase Syed

Research Scientist

Biography

Dr. Awase Syed is a Research Scientist with the Geospatial Sensing and Data Intelligence Lab of the University of Waterloo. He earned his PhD degree in geographic information systems from the Department of Geography (GIS Division), University of Zurich, Switzerland. He was supported by a full scholarship from the EU- Vth Framework Project. He was an Assistant Professor at IIIT-Bangalore, India, where he setup the Center for Spatial Information Science. He has international experience working in academia (Switzerland, India, and Saudi Arabia), industry (Thomson Reuters, ABB GISL, SycliQ Geospatial/TPRI) for building technology platforms. He has been empowering the ecosystem by sharing technical skills with various technology firms and engages with them as an external consultant.

His research focused on geospatial search and fusion of real-time sensor data to integrate with spatial data infrastructures. He built the SycliQ hyperlocal sensing probe and mobile dashboard to pair with probe to capture environmental and operational parameters in real-time. Expanding the scope to building geospatial sensor search platforms for precision farming and industrial monitoring. His research experience helps him expand his research agenda to investigate approaches to extraction of geospatial information from historical paper maps for augmented reality or holographic projections to integrate it with existing spatial data infrastructure using mobile devices.

In addition to this, he is focused on expanding the use of mobile device to navigate through various landscape using mixed reality geospatial search infrastructure using augmented reality/virtual reality.
