The International Cartographic Association (ICA) Commission on Sensor-driven Mapping (2019-2023) continues main activities carried out by previous Commission (2015-2019) with a few modified terms of reference. The Commission obtained an official approval of the 18th General Assembly of the ICA held in Tokyo, Japan in July 2019.
With rapid advances in sensor technologies, various types of geospatial data nowadays can be collected in innovative ways by imaging and ranging sensors (e.g., digital cameras, multi- and hyper-spectral scanners, synthetic aperture radars, laser scanners) onboard satellites, aircrafts, unmanned aerial vehicles, boats, trains, vans and cars) as well as by backpack and handheld sensors. Both geometric and semantic information derived from such sensor datasets can be used for informed decision making and contribution to solving real world problems. However, how to accurately and reliably extract information from the sensor datasets remains a very changing topic in cartography and other geoinformation communities. The establishment of this Commission within the ICA attempts to promote collaboration in sensor-derived mapping technologies
During the term of 2019-2023, the Commission is chaired by Prof. Jonathan Li, University of Waterloo, Canada, co-chaired by Prof. Yifang Ban, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, Prof. Jan Feranec, Institute of Geography, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovakia, and Prof. Ruisheng Wang, Department of Geomatics Engineering, University of Calgary, Canada.
