Jennifer Clapp, a Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security and Sustainability at the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Environment, has been awarded the 2018 Innis-Gérin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). The biennial award, presented by the RSC, honours a Canadian scholar for their distinguished and sustained contribution to the literature of the social sciences.

Phoebe Stephens, a PhD candidate in social and ecological sustainability in the School of Environment, Sustainability and Resources at the University of Waterloo.  has been named one of Canada’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation scholars for her project investigating the need for sustainable food systems.

We’re excited to announce that the 2018 CUT Award has been awarded to Caitlin Scott from the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. The award honours Caitlin's commitment to implementing feedback for the continuous improvement and development of her teaching, her thoughtful approach to assessing student learning, and the practice of reflection that she regularly brings to her work as an instructor.

The School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability is pleased to share Professor Jennifer Clapp is the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Environmental Studies Section of the International Studies Association. The award recognizes outstanding scholars whose long history of excellent research and teaching has had substantial impact on fields associated with international relations and environmental issues.

On International Women’s Day 2018, all of the Canada Research Chairs in the Faculty of Environment are women — this isn’t necessarily by design — but it does stand out, as it speaks to the importance of representation in academia and the changing face of environmental justice.

Dr. Jennifer Clapp presented a lecture titled "Mega Mergers on the Menu: Corporate Concentration and the Politics of Sustainability in the Global Food System" for the 16th Bentley Lecture in Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Alberta on January 25, 2018. Her talk was covered by Kevin Ma of the St. Albert Gazette in this article "Who's Minding the Mergers?".

Oane Visser, Jennifer Clapp and S. Ryan Isakson edited a special issue for the Journal of Agrarian Change: “Global finance and the agrifood sector: Risk and regulation”, which is now available online as an ‘Early View’.

Jennifer Clapp has a new publication in Sustainability Science as a Special Feature in the journal’s discussion on sustainable landscapes. It is now available under Open Access from the publisher.

Her article examines the complex dynamics of distance in the global food system, and discusses the impacts on local agricultural landscapes.

“In early 2014, QUNO (Quaker United Nations Office) convened an off the record expert consultation, in which different actors were able to share and develop ideas about the development of a new framework for trade and investment in agriculture and strategize on a shared plan for change.
