Choosing the right Teams

Tuesday, December 19, 2023

A new Microsoft Teams application will be introduced at the University of Waterloo during the Winter 2024 Reading Week. That new application may be installed on your computer already as part of a recent update to Microsoft Office. This raises the question, which Teams do you run?

There could be up to three Teams applications on your computer:

Teams Consumer Version icon
Microsoft Teams with a purple T on a white background is the consumer version of Teams that cannot be used with your University of Waterloo account
Teams New Version icon
Microsoft Teams (work or school) with a white T on a purple background with the word "NEW" along the bottom is the Teams that will be available after Reading Week (February 17-25, 2024). It will be accompanied by the text "(work or school)"
Teams Current Version icon
Microsoft Teams classic (work or school) with a white T on a purple background is the current Teams application that you should use. It may be accompanied by the text "(work or school)"

If you choose the "New Microsoft Teams" accidentally, you will see a message that “Your admin has restricted access to the new Teams” (see below). Simply click the button to “Switch to classic Teams” to launch the classic version that will be used until the Winter 2024 Reading Week.
