Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released a statement on November 15, 2024, declaring that international students in Canada may now work up to 24 hours per week for off-campus employment. This is an increase from the previous limit of 20 hours per week. This change in policy is effective from November 15, 2024 onward.

Also included in this announcement was the now mandatory requirement that international students must be approved for a new study permit before changing their designated learning institution (DLI). This new requirement started on November 8, 2024. Previously there was a “transfer DLI” function in which students could simply report their new DLI through their IRCC Secure Account and continue using their current study permit to continue studying at the new school. This is no longer the case. More details about changing your DLI can be found here.
