UPDATE: The immigration measures for Sudanese temporary residents in Canada have been extended until October 27, 2024 and this article has been updated to reflect the change.
On April 24, 2023, IRCC announced new immigration measures to support Sudanese temporary residents who are currently in Canada and may be unable to return home due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in their country.
The current temporary measures came into effect on April 30, 2023, and have been extended until October 27, 2024.
During this time, Sudanese nationals in Canada are able to:
-
Extend their current temporary resident status (study permit, work permit, or visitor record) and be exempt from paying application fees or biometrics fees
-
Change their temporary resident status (for example, from a visitor to a worker)
Please note:
-
If you fall under these temporary measures, you can apply for an additional open work permit while already holding a valid study permit as both permits can be held simultaneously
-
Fee exemptions will not apply to Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or restoration of status applications
