Instruction

  • Introduction to ArchivesLearn what an archive is, what primary sources are, and the types of materials held in SCA. Participants will receive an overview of online platforms maintained by SCA to facilitate independent research, and basic strategies for locating and requesting archival materials. The session also covers how to book an appointment, what to expect during a visit, and how to properly handle material in the reading room.
  • Curated displays: SCA staff create displays of archival material and rare books to support the contextualization and illustration of identified learning outcomes during instruction by faculty and staff. 
  • Assignment development partnershipsWork collaboratively with a librarian to design assignments that incorporate the use of archival materials. This service includes specialized consultation to align archival resources with course outcomes and ensure meaningful integration into student work.

Advance notice and planning is essential to meeting your teaching and learning outcomes

  • At least two weeks notice is required to schedule introductory sessions.
  • Assignment development partnerships are offered on a first come, first serve basis and dependent on existing department commitments. 

Staff workshops

Workshops that help University of Waterloo staff learn about SCA and discover how archival materials can enhance projects, planning, communications, and other initiatives are available upon request. In addition to supporting staff learning and skills development, this session provides an opportunity to build partnerships across campus and offers a unique team‑building activity that can be tailored to unit or group interests. 

Tours

Special Collections & Archives staff offer guided tours upon request for individuals and groups seeking an introduction to the department's services, examples of collections in our care, and how physical access to collections is supported.
