It S’more than a Bondfire! The Ultimate Science Club Collaboration

By Nayla Qureshi (MNS Society President) and Arzo Baig (SciSoc Co-President)

Once again, all the Science Clubs came together for one collaborative event: the Science Clubs Bondfire.

This event was originally created in Spring 2024 (S24) by the Materials and Nanosciences Society (MNS Soc) Co-Presidents, Nayla Qureshi and Bastian Perez. What began as a simple idea for an MNS bondfire quickly evolved into something bigger: “Why don’t we make it Science Clubs-wide—including clubs and societies both under and outside of Science Society (SciSoc)?” And with that, the Ultimate Science Clubs Bondfire event was born.

Aside from orientations and occasional meetings, the science clubs had never hosted an event together as a unified community. While clubs often collaborate with similar departmental groups for outreach, the MNS Co-Presidents identified a gap: the need for an event that brought all science students together.

The first edition of the bondfire took place last spring (S24) and saw an incredible turnout. It was inspiring to watch the entire science community come together to organize and enjoy an event that, while individually popular, was now being run as a team.

A big thanks to all the clubs for making this event a fun yet memorable event. This term (S25), the MNS Society brought the Bondfire back with the goal of making it an annual tradition; and it was a huge success. Students from across science programs came together to enjoy an evening filled with sports (frisbee, badminton), laughter around the fire, and the smell of roasted marshmallows and hotdogs.

What started as a simple idea last year has quickly grown into something bigger: a night where students can step away from their studies, meet new people, and feel part of something larger; the science community as a whole. From laughter and late-night chats, to clubs coming together to make it all happen, the event was more than just a Bondfire.

As the Bondfire continues to grow, it has become more than just an evening around the fire; it stands as a symbol of unity, collaboration, and the vibrant community of the Faculty of Science. With two successful editions behind us, the Science Clubs Bondfire has proven its ability to bring students together from across departments and societies and strengthening our shared community. This tradition not only highlights the power of working together but also sets the stage for even bigger and better events in the future. A big shout to all 13 clubs and their hardworking teams for making this tradition possible:

  • Science Society (SciSoc)
  • Biochemistry Student Association (BSA)
  • Biomedical Student Association (BMSA)
  • Biology Undergraduate Student Society (BUGS)
  • Chemistry Club (ChemClub)
  • Materials and Nanosciences Society (MNS Soc)
  • Physics Undergraduate Society (PhysClub)
  • Science and Business Student Association (SBSA)
  • Earth and Environmental Undergraduate Club (WATROX)
  • FemPhys
  • Aviation Society
  • Psychology Society (PsychSoc)
  • Astronomy Club

We can’t wait to see how the Bondfire evolves in the years to come. And we look forward to welcoming even more students and clubs to be part of this growing legacy.
