Laura Bombulis is the Faculty of Mathematics Co-op Student of the Year because of her exemplary work in improving efficiency at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. In her role as bioinformatics analyst to investigate mechanisms of tumour growth and identify genetic and biological markers that guide precision in medicine for aggressive cancer.
Bombulis examined the usage of the tool that the o=company uses for sample tumour analysis, learning to analyze cancer genomes. In addition to this, she worked individually to revamp algorithms, leaving her with the takeaway that she took part in cutting-edge cancer research that can impact cancer patients health outcomes.
