Capturing first place was the Suncayr team (photo left) comprised of Derek Jouppi, Andrew Martinko, Rachel Paulter, Hayden Soboleski and Chad Sweeting. A cool solution to a burning problem, Suncayr is an easy-to-use marker that indicates when sunscreen needs to be reapplied.  The fourth-year team’s innovative idea has won many honours, including the first James Dyson Award ever to be awarded to a Canadian team.

Second spot in the innovation design category was awarded to nanotechnology engineering students (photo left) Kristopher Bicanic, Richard Garner, Matthew Mulvale, and Adam Svatos for the project entitled microfabricating an electrospray Ion Thruster for use on microsatellites.

Waterloo's two innovation design category winning teams will compete in the Canadian Engineering Competition taking place at Memorial University March 5 to 8.  Good luck!
